Govt may extend duty-free raw sugar import to Jun 30, add more ports.

Govt may extend the deadline of duty-free imports of raw sugar to Jun 30 from Jun 12, and allow imports at three to four more ports in the south zone. Applicants had asked us to allow the imports at more ports in the southern region and to extend the timeline and written to Directorate General of Foreign Trade to add about three-four ports such as Karaikal port in south zone. Government may allow imports until Jun 30, the quantity permitted would remain unchanged. On April 5, government has allowed duty-free imports of up to 500,000 tonne raw sugar until Jun 12 under the Tariff Rate Quota in a bid to ensure adequate supplies in the country. Government allowed import of 300,000 tonne duty-free raw sugar in the south zone via Tuticorin, Chennai, Mangaluru, and Kakinada ports; 150,000 tonne in the west zone through Kandla and Mumbai ports; and 50,000 tonne in east zone through Haldia and Paradeep ports.
