The government notified the eligibility criteria for sugar mills to avail the recently announced financial assistance worth 55.38 bln rupees to help mills make timely payments to sugarcane farmers. The Union Cabinet, on Sep 26, approved a subsidy of 138.8 rupees per tn on cane crushed in 2018-19 and a sugar transport subsidy of 1,000-3,000 rupees per tn. Sugar mills will be entitled to the sugarcane subsidy on actual cane crushed by them during 2018-19, or an estimated 300 mln tn, whichever is lower.
