National Academy of Agricultural Sciences urged PM Narendra Modi to give an environmental clearance to genetically modified mustard variety DMH-11. Field trials of the mustard variety can begin only after an approvals by the environment ministry. In May, the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee had approved commercial cultivation of genetically modified DMH-11 mustard. Activists and anti-genetically modified lobby groups have been opposing the introduction of the transgenic crop on various grounds.
