Sugar down in most markets on low demand amid heavy selling.

Poor demand from bulk buyers dragged down prices of sugar in most of the key wholesale markets in the country. Prices of the medium-grade sugar fell by 5 rupees per 100 kg each in Mumbai and Kolhapur, while 7 rupees down in Delhi. Even industrial demand, which was expected to pick up with the onset of summer season, remains weak. The fall in sugar prices in north India can also be attributed to the selling pressure on mills as they have to clear cane arrears. The most active May contract on the bourse was down 0.7%.
