Bajra acreage up 61.46% on year on good monsoon progress.

India Bajra acreage was up 61.46% on year at 0.466 million hectares due to good progress of monsoon rains across major growing regions. Southwest monsoon rains have been near normal so far and according to the India Meteorological Department, the currents are likely to cover most parts of the country in the next two to three days. Typically, monsoon covers the entire country by Jul 15.

India Bajra acreage at 8,200 ha as of Wed, up 34% on year.

The area under kharif bajra across the country as of Wednesday was at 8,200 ha, up 34.4% on year. The rise in acreage of the coarse grain can be attributed to early onset of southwest monsoon this year. The rise in acreage under bajra is mainly driven by a higher area in Rajasthan, where the acreage was at 50,000 ha, up from 14,000 ha a year ago.

Jordan issued international tender to purchase 100,000 tonnes barley.

Jordan state grain buyer issued another international tender to purchase 100,000 tonnes of animal feed barley to be sourced from optional origins, European traders said. Tender deadline is June 21, traders said. The new tender had been expected after Jordan made no purchase in its previous tender for 100,000 tonnes which closed on June 15.

Kharif bajra acreage at 1,000 hectares, unchanged on year.

The area under kharif bajra across the country for 2017-18 (Jul-Jun) as of Thursday was at 1,000 hectares, unchanged on year. Bajra sowing has started only in Tamil Nadu so far and is likely to rise with the onset of southwest monsoon over the country. Maharashtra has aimed 2017-18 kharif bajra area at 1.1 million hectares against 845,000 hectares last year, however, bajra sowing has not started in the major producing state so far.
