The Maharashtra government has extended the registration date for procurement of urad and moong under the minimum support price to Oct 24 from Oct 9. Procurement of moong and urad will commence from Oct 11. Output of kharif moong in the country in 2018-19 (Jul-Jun) is estimated at 1.58 mln tn, while urad production is expected to be 2.65 mln tn. As of now, a total of 20,341 farmers have registered themselves for the procurement, of which 6,183 have registered for moong procurement, 8,851 for urad.

Farmers in the country have sown urad across 4.04 mln ha this kharif season, down 9% on year. Urad acreage this kharif season is already well above the five-year average of 3.14 mln ha for the corresponding period. In Madhya Pradesh, the largest grower of urad, acreage was down 7.7% on year at 1.65 mln ha as farmers shifted to paddy and soybean for lucrative returns. Harvesting of urad has begun in some parts of Madhya Pradesh and fresh arrivals are entering the market. Madhya Pradesh’s urad output in 2018-19 is estimated at 1.73 mln tn, down 1.1% from last year.

New crop of urad or black matpe has started arriving in some parts of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the two key producing states, over the last few days. However, the new crop is being sold at 2,800-3,000 rupees per 100 kg, compared with 3,500-3,700 rupees a year ago, as urad prices are already 46% below the minimum support price of 5,600 rupees per 100 kg fixed by the government for 2018-19 (Jul-Jun). Prices are down this year due to higher moisture content in the new crop. New crop arrivals have started on time this year in Madhya Pradesh, and about 50-60 bags (1 bag = 100 kg) are arriving daily in the market as against 100-120 bags last year. The new crop this year has moisture content of 15-16% compared with 12-13% last year, which has led to fall in domestic demand. In Maharashtra, another key market, arrivals of urad have started in Latur, and 2,500-3,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg) are arriving daily in the market as against 5,000-6,000 bags last year. Arrivals of the pulse are lower as output is expected to fall due to erratic weather conditions in the key growing areas of the state. New crop is currently being sold in the range of 3,500-4,000 rupees per 100 kg, up 50-100 rupees from the year-ago period.

Urad acreage during this kharif reason is already well above the five-year average of 3.12 mln ha for the corresponding week. In Madhya Pradesh, the largest grower of urad, acreage was down 7.7% on year at 1.65 mln ha as farmers shifted to paddy and soybean for lucrative returns.

In Madhya Pradesh, the largest grower of urad, acreage was down 16.7% on year at 1.49 mln ha as farmers shifted to paddy and soybean in search for lucrative returns. For 2018-19 (Jul-Jun), the government has increased the minimum support price for paddy by up to 13% and for urad by 3.7%. Last year, many farmers opted for urad instead of soybean due to scattered rains and low realisations from the latter, which resulted in a jump in urad acreage. The country produced 2.84 mln tn of urad during the last kharif season.

Last year, many farmers opted for urad instead of soybean due to scattered rains and low realisations from the latter, which resulted in a jump in urad acreage.

Small Farmers’ Agribusiness Consortium has offered to sell 1,748.23 tn of urad and 248.50 tn of moong through NCDEX e-Markets. The pulses are stocked at various central and state godowns in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.

This year, rainfall has been good and prices of paddy are attractive. There was loss of urad crop last year due to wilt disease, which also made farmers cautious about the crop this year.

Farmers in the country sowed kharif urad across 3.25 mln ha down 11.3% on year. In Madhya Pradesh, the largest grower, area under urad was down 10.4% on year at 1.46 mln ha as farmers have shifted to paddy.
