USDA sees India year to Sep 2018 sugar output up 18% at 25.8 million tonne.

In 2017-18 (Oct-Sep), production of sugar in India in terms of raw value is estimated at 25.8 million tonne, up 18% on year. The estimate includes 540,000 tonne of Khandsari variety. The output of sugar in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra are expected to be at 9.3 million tonne and 7.9 million tonne. Both states now contribute upwards of 73% of India total sugar production, a notable uptick from their earlier cumulative average of 60%. Estimated India consumption of sugar in 2017-18 at 26 million tonne, marginally up from 25.6 million tone estimated for the ongoing season. The area under sugarcane in 2017-18 is expected to rise to 4.7 million hectare from 4.5 million hectare the previous year.
