Around 15,000 ha cotton crop in Haryana affected by whitefly attacks.

Whiteflies have affected the cotton crop across nearly 15,000 ha in Haryana. The institute had recently said the whitefly attack reached the economic threshold limit of six pests per leaf in various districts of Haryana. The cotton crop in parts of Punjab has also been hampered by whitefly attacks. However, the area affected in Punjab is still to be surveyed. We have surveyed Hisar, Sirsa and Fatehabad districts and found that the attack has already reached its threshold at around 15,000 ha. Accordingly, we have advised farmers to take required steps. Whitefly damages the cotton crop by either sucking sap from the leaves directly, or by infecting the crop with cotton leaf curl virus.
