Farmers in the country have sown chana across 5.02 mln ha. Chana acreage however, higher than the five-year average of 4.58 mln ha for the corresponding period. A fall in acreage of the pulse in key growing states of Karnataka and Maharashtra led to the overall decline in sowing. Area under chana fell in Karnataka and Maharashtra due to drought in key growing regions of the states. Area under chana in Karnataka fell 42.4% on year to 681,000 ha and in Maharashtra, it was down 47.6% at 543,300 ha.
