ABARES pegs Australia 2017-18 chana crop down 24% on lower yield.

Output of chickpea or chana crop is estimated to fall by 24% in 2017-18 (Oct-Sep) to 1.42 mln tn, due to a likely fall in yield. Acreage is expected to reach a record 1.1 mln ha during 2017-18, up 3% from last year, in response to higher expected returns for chana than for cereals. This is despite risk of disease posed by not strictly following recommended crop rotations. Yield of chickpea in Queensland is estimated to fall to 1.32 tn per ha from 1.64 tn in 2016-17.
