ABARES pegs Australia 2017-18 wheat crop at 20.3 MMT, down 42% YoY.

The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences has estimated the country’s wheat output for 2017-18 at 20.3 mln tn, down 42.1% from last year’s record production of 35.0 mln tn. The estimate is also lower than 21.6 mln tn projected in September. The country’s wheat acreage in 2017-18 is estimated at 12.4 mln ha, down from 12.8 mln ha in the previous year. However, the sharp fall in production comes from poor yield after a late winter and early spring rainfall in key growing areas this year
