Bangladesh summer rice output seen up at 19.7 mln tn

Summer rice production in Bangladesh in 2018-19 is seen at 19.7 mln tn, against the previous estimate of 19.0 mln tn. The summer-sown crop, also known as boro, usually contributes more than half of Bangladesh’s typical annual rice production of around 35 mln tn. Acreage has gone up as farmers decided to cash in on higher prices. The acreage under the crop is now seen at over 4.9 mln ha from a target of 4.7 mln ha. Bangladesh emerged as a major rice importer in 2017 due to flash floods that damaged crops and pushed domestic prices to record highs. The country had then imported rice from India, Vietnam and Thailand.
