Bangladesh to buy up to 1 MMT rice from Thailand per year till 2021.

Bangladesh has signed a pact to import up to 1 mln tn of rice from Thailand each year over the next four years. The countries will decide on the purchase price after considering prices of the grain globally. Thailand had initially sought $500 per tn for the grain, which Bangladesh did not agree to. Earlier, Bangladesh had approached India for such a deal, but the countries could not reach an agreement on prices. The country has signed deals with Vietnam and Cambodia, too. In addition, it has floated tenders to import 350,000 tn of rice in the last two months. Bangladesh is buying rice aggressively, as flash floods in March damaged up to 90% of the country’s standing boro rice crop. The situation worsened due to fungal attacks after the floods.
