Canada has scaled up its 2016-17 (Aug-Jul) price estimate for chana, while retaining that for peas and masur. Chana or chickpeas prices for 2016-17 have been forecast higher at $950-$960 per tn from $900-$920 per tn estimated last month. There are expectations of decline in the carry-over stocks. The average price is forecast to be sharply higher than that for the previous year due to tighter world supplies. However, in 2017-18, output of chana is expected to rise to 115,000 tn from 82,000 tn LY. Peas prices in 2016-17 are estimated to be largely unchanged at $295-$305 per tn from $290-$310 per tn estimated in May. The department has slashed its price forecast for 2017-18 to $275-$305 per tn.
