Mills in Brazil’s centre-south region produced 1.29 mln tn sugar during the second fortnight of September, down 55% from 2.86 mln tn in the year-ago period, the country’s sugarcane industry association. The sugar season in Brazil, the top producer and exporter of the sweetener, runs from April to March, with mills in the centre-south region crushing cane till October. Mills in the region, which account for more than 90% of the country’s total sugar output, crushed 27.64 mln tn sugarcane during Sep 16-30, down 31.7% on year. The sharp fall in production of sugar can be attributed to the winding up of cane crushing operations by mills. Until the beginning of October, five sugar factories had stopped operating for the 2018-19 season. During Apr-Sep, mills in the region crushed 457.93 mln tn cane, down 2.3% on year. During the same period, they produced 22.27 mln tn sugar
