The Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare reported a significant increase in Chana sowing across India as of December 9, 2024. The sowing area for Chana rose by 7.1%, reaching 8,609 thousand hectares (Ha.), compared to 8,035 thousand Ha. during the same period last year.
Meanwhile, chana acreage is down from 8651 thousand ha. normal acreage during the same corresponding factor.
Regional Trends in Chana Sowing
Rajasthan, a key player in Chana cultivation, recorded a notable rise in sowing activities. According to the Rajasthan Agriculture Department, as of December 6, Chana sowing reached 1,969 thousand hectares, a 10.6% increase from the 1,779 thousand hectares sown during the same period in 2023.
Gujarat, however, showed a contrasting trend, with a sharp decline in its overall rabi pulses sowing. The sowing area reduced by 12.75% year-on-year to 490 thousand hectares as of December 9, 2024, compared to 560 thousand hectares in the previous rabi season. The decrease was more pronounced in Chana sowing, which dropped by 17% to 440 thousand hectares from 520 thousand hectares last year.
Telangana also reported a significant drop in Chana sowing. The state recorded a 20% year-on-year decrease, with the sowing area falling to 63.3 thousand hectares in 2024-25 from 78.9 thousand hectares in 2023-24.
