Chana variety developed in India to help Bangladesh boost yield .

A new heat-tolerant variety of chana, BARI Chola-10, developed at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics in India released in Bangladesh. Chana sowing is delayed up to December since the cultivation starts after the harvest of rice in Bangladesh. This puts the crop under heat stress and it reduces its yield. The improved variety of chana, BARI Chola-10, is heat-tolerant, resistant to fungal disease botrytis grey mold and is also high-yielding. Currently, Bangladesh import chana from other countries to meet the domestic demand. Bangladesh imported 205,000 tonne of chana worth $127 million in 2013.
