India’s rabi maize output in 2017-18 is expected to be 500,000 tn higher than last year at 6 mln tn. After floods in the eastern region of the country last year, soil moisture is high and weather conditions have been favourable so far. However, overall output for 2017-18 is likely to be lower than last year due to a smaller kharif crop. India’s maize output in the kharif season was at 15.8 mln tn and total output this year is seen around 21.8 mln tn, down from 23.5 mln tn in 2016-17. While maize output in the country is decreasing, demand from feed industry is growing at a rate of 8% per year. If demand continues to increase at the same pace, India may become a net importer of maize in a year or two unless it increases production
