Down in Maharashtra on weak demand, steady in N India. Weak bulk demand amid high supply continued to weigh on prices of sugar in the key wholesale markets of Maharashtra. The medium-grade variety of the sweetener was sold at 3,400 rupees per 100 kg in Mumbai and at 3,190 rupees in Kolhapur, both down by 10 rupees. Demand is very weak right now but the government has announced a higher sale quota for the month (September). So, demand and supply do not match. For September, the Centre has allocated 2 mln tn for sale and has allowed sugar mills, which have exported the sweetener in the ongoing season, to sell an additional quantity equivalent to their exports till August.
