Area under field pea across the country continued to lag on year due to adverse weather in the largest growing state of Madhya Pradesh. Area under the crop was at 805,600 ha, down 5% on year. In Madhya Pradesh, area under the pulse was at 232,000 ha, 18% lower on year. Sowing has lagged in the state because of higher-than-normal temperatures. In major growing areas, average maximum temperature have been nearly 1.6 degrees Celsius above normal, while the average minimum temperature have been nearly 2 degrees Celsius above normal. The lag in sowing in Madhya Pradesh was partially offset by higher acreage in Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh, acreage rose by about 8% on year to 434,200 ha, topping the seasonal average of 350,000 ha.
