Government Extends Free Import Policy for Yellow Peas and Urad

In a move aimed at ensuring adequate supply and price stability in the domestic market, the Indian government has extended the free import policy for Yellow Peas and Urad, facilitating easier imports for traders.

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Department of Commerce, issued a notification confirming the extension. As per the updated rules, the import of Yellow Peas under the ITC (HS) Code 07131010 will now continue to be classified as “Free” without any previously applicable Minimum Import Price (MIP) conditions or port restrictions. However, traders are required to register their imports under the online Import Monitoring System.

Extended Import Policy for Yellow Peas

The revised policy allows all shipments with a Bill of Lading (Shipped on Board) dated on or before May 31, 2025, to be imported freely under these new conditions. Previously, the free import policy for Yellow Peas was set to expire on February 28, 2025. With the latest extension, traders now have an additional three months until May 31, 2025, to import Yellow Peas under the updated provisions. The notification also clarifies that all other terms and conditions from previous government regulations remain unchanged.

Urad Import Policy Extended Until March 2026

In addition to Yellow Peas, the government has also extended the free import policy for Urad dal until March 31, 2026. The previous deadline was set for March 31, 2025, but the new extension grants traders an additional year for import under relaxed conditions.

The government’s decision to extend the import policy for both pulses is expected to help stabilize domestic prices and ensure sufficient supply. Pulses form an essential part of India’s food security framework, and the government frequently modifies import policies to strike a balance between supply and demand.

This latest extension is part of India’s ongoing efforts to manage agricultural imports strategically and ensure the steady availability of essential food items across the country.
