India bans wheat import from wheat blast-hit Bangladesh, S America.

Govt has banned import of wheat from Bangladesh and Latin American countries that have reported deadly wheat blast disease to prevent spread of the disease in Indian crops. In the last rabi season, the government had to burn the standing wheat crop over more than 1,000 ha in West Bengal that were affected by wheat blast. The Latin American fungal wheat disease had made its way across the border from Bangladesh into India in the rabi season, and led to 90% decline in the output in the affected fields. The air-borne wheat disease, which entered Bangladesh through imports from Latin American countries, destroyed wheat crop over 15,000 ha in seven districts in the neighbouring country in 2015.
