India govt says no plans to raise wheat import duty.

Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, said the government has no immediate plans to hike wheat import duty from the existing 10% while adding that there are adequate supplies in the domestic market in view of the bumper crop in 2016-17. On March 28, an import duty of 10% was imposed on wheat to curb shipments in view of record domestic output. The Union Minister also clarified that there is no plan to allow further import of sugar at zero duty. He said the country has sufficient stock of sugar to meet the current demand. The government had allowed duty-free import of five lakh tonnes of sugar. However, last month import duty on the sweetener was hiked to 50% to restrict cheap imports.
