Prices of maize fell in wholesale markets due to weak demand from the poultry sector. Demand is weak as heavy rains during the pollination stage of the crop in September hit the quality of the crop. Poor demand and fresh arrivals are likely to keep maize prices subdued in the days ahead. Farmers in Karnataka are keen that the government procure the grain, traders said. The state government had urged the Centre to procure 600,000 tn of maize at the support price to avert distress sales by farmers.
