From worries of a shortfall to concerns of oversupply, the tide has turned quickly for the maize market. Maize prices, which were initially expected to rise exponentially, are now seen plunging to a four-year low of 1,000 rupees per 100 kg in one or two months. After frequent rains in the past few months in Bihar, a key producer of rabi maize, market participants started speculating about a fall in maize output. The output survived bad weather, but its quality took a hit. Maize prices witnessed a sharp fall of 150-200 rupees in the past 20 days due to poor quality as rains have led to higher moisture content in the grain.
