India spot wheat prices flat despite hike in import duty.

The government’s decision to hike the import duty on wheat seems to have failed to impact spot prices as they remained flat for the third straight day. After the hike in import duty, prices rose sharply for one-two days but they fell to the same level thereafter…the current price of wheat is largely unchanged from what it was before the hike. The government on Nov 8, increased the import duty on wheat to 20% from 10% to ensure good returns to farmers and encourage them to cultivate the grain in the ongoing rabi season.
