According to the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited (NFCSF), India’s sugar production has reached 13.5 million tones till January 15, which was 15.1 Million tones (MT) during the same period last year. The lower production is due to red rot and other diseases along with adverse weather conditions like extreme heat and a late start of winter, which postponed the milling operation at sugar mills. Total sugar production for the current crushing season (2024-25) is estimated to be 27 MT, down from 31.9 MT in the previous season. Till January 15 only 507 sugar mills are operational this season, compared to 524 mills last year.
Following are the details of key producing sates:
Utter Pradesh production down to 4.28 MT Vs 4.61 MT last year.
Maharashtra production down to 4.3 MT Vs 5.28 MT last year.
Karnataka production down to 2.71 MT Vs 3.1 MT last year.
India’s Average sugar recovery from sugarcane has also declined to 8.81 % compared from 9.37 % during the same period last year. Uttar Pradesh, sugar recovery dropped to 9.05% from 9.90% . Moreover sugar recovery in Maharashtra’s , it declined to 8.80% from 8.95% and Karnataka sugar recovery dropped to 8.50% from 9.60% during the same period last year.
