India wheat imports in FY18 so far at 1.5 MMT.

In the current marketing year (Apr-Mar) so far, India has signed deals to import nearly 1.5 mln tn of wheat. About 600,000 tn wheat has already landed in the country, 200,000 tn is in transit and the rest is being loaded. Wheat imports in India are high despite a record high crop at home in 2016-17 (Jul-Jun), as imported wheat is cheaper for buyers in south India and other coastal regions compared to wheat from north Indian producers. Currently, Ukrainian wheat is at around $200 a tn, cost and freight (or cnf), and for the Australian variety, it is $245-$250 a tn, cnf.
