Indonesia’s Rice Imports Surge 62% Amid Supply Challenges

Indonesia’s rice imports have experienced a dramatic increase, reaching 3.85 million tonne from January to November 2024, reflecting a 62% rise compared to the same period last year, according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS). The total value of these imports has soared to 2.36 billion U.S. dollars, continuing a trend of escalating import costs that began in 2022. The bulk of the rice imports has come from Thailand with a volume of 1.19 million tonne and Vietnam with 1.12 million tonne, Mayanmar with 663,410 tonne, Pakistan with 642,140 tonne, and India with 205,800 tonne also contributing to the growing demand. This sharp rise in imports is attributed to domestic supply issues, largely due to crop failures linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon, affecting the country’s agriculture sector.

In response to these challenges, the Indonesian government has set an ambitious target to produce 32 million tonne of rice in 2025 to achieve food self-sufficiency. This initiative aims to stabilize the domestic rice supply and reduce reliance on imports. As the country faces ongoing hurdles in agricultural production, government officials emphasize the importance of enhancing local farming practices and improving resilience against climate-related disruptions.
