The Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) has released its first estimate for the 2024-25 season (October-September), the net sugar production is estimated lower at 29.3 million tonnes, from 31.96 million tonnes produced in previous season’s . ISMA also estimates that the gross production( before diversion) of sugar may be 33.3 million tonnes, same as the preliminary estimate in July. In Last season, gross production was 34.1 million tonnes.
There should be adequate supply of sugar on the domestic market because of a carryover stock of roughly 8.5 million tonnes from the previous season. India consumed roughly 29 metric tonnes of sugar during the 2023–24 sugar season, according to government sales allocation data.
According to the Agriculture Ministry’s sugarcane production estimate, which was made public on November 5, the output of cane will decrease from 453.16 mt in 2023–2024 to 439.93 mt in 2024–2025. According to sources, the government arrived at the estimate after considering field reports of pest infestations and acreage data obtained from satellite mapping. According to sources, yield is anticipated to increase despite acreage declining from 5.74 million hectares (mh) to 5.37 mh. In the 2024–25 season, ISMA predicted that total availability would be 41.78 mt, internal consumption would be 29 mt, sugar (sucrose) would be diverted to ethanol at a rate of 4 mt, and closing stock (as of September 30, 2025) would be 8.78 mt. According to the report, sugar production in Maharashtra might decrease from 11point 85 mt to 11point 1 mt, Karnataka would remain flat at 5point 81 mt, and Uttar Pradesh would remain flat at 11 mt. The total amount of sugar produced in other states might also decrease from 5.41 mt to 5.38 mt. (The Hindu Business line)
