Karnataka government has stopped the sale of paddy seeds in some districts such as Mandya, and restricted their availability in Mysuru and Chamrajnagar as the state faces its fourth consecutive year of drought. The move is aimed at forcing farmers to shift from cultivating water- intensive paddy and sugarcane crops to drought-tolerant millets such as ragi and jowar.
