East African Grain Council (EAGC) is planning a meeting with maize stakeholders as it seeks to avert a looming shortage of the commodity in Kenya. EAGC executive director Gerald Masila, who was in Uganda last week for a session with grain stakeholders, said the neighbouring country has adequate maize for export which Kenya can benefit from to stem dwindling stocks in strategic reserves. Next month we will conduct a meeting in Uganda involving maize traders and farmers from the region to help mitigate shortage in Kenya,” Masila told People Daily. Kenyan traders have been importing maize through Busia border since November last year due to lower pricing. Masila said Uganda is estimated to have between five and six million bags of maize for export whose availability in the market is supported by low consumption of maize.
