Kerala farmers switch from paddy cultivation to spinach farming to combat climate change.

Farmers in the village of Venniyoor are shifting from the cultivation of paddy and bananas to spinach as the leafy green vegetable consumes much less time to harvest and its demand never goes down.Venniyoor used to be famous for paddy farming as farmers made use of water from nearby lakes to grow the crops. Now the lakes have dried up and have forced the farmers to look for an alternative. Some farmers turned to producing bananas and tapioca but it did not yield satisfactory results. The farmers are now able to make profits out of selling spinach as it is very common household vegetable. Farmers say that even if weather plays spoilsport and damages the crop, they can recover the loss in a month’s time.
