Maharashtra asks Centre to hike import duty on tur to 25% from 10%.

Maharashtra govt asked the Centre to increase import duty on tur to 25% from 10% to arrest a sharp fall in prices. The Centre had imposed 10% duty on import of the pulse on March 28. Prices of tur have fallen below the govt-mandated MSP, including the bonus, on hopes of a record pulses production this year ending June. A trade pact with Myanmar as well as with Africa, so any imposition of import duty is baseless as the actual incidence would be nil. Myanmar and Africa are subject to the duty-free tariff preference scheme for Least Development Countries with India. About 50% of the India 400,000-500,000 tonne tur import comes from Myanmar and the remaining from African countries such as Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. The Centre as well as states such as Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana together are likely to have purchased over 800,000-900,000 tonne tur so far.
