Maize imports from Uganda to Kenya grew 78 per cent in January compared with December 2017, as traders rushed to cash in on the high prices in the country following shortage of the grain. Eastern African Grain Council (EAGC) indicate cross-border trade between the two countries increased from 25,791 tonnes last December to 46,010 tonnes with a value of Sh1.4 billion. Good maize prices in Kenya and improved production in Uganda helped to increase the volumes of grain traded between the two neighbouring states. There was increased cross-border trade through the western trade corridor with cheaper maize sources from the eastern markets of Uganda.
