Futures contracts of coriander on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange hit the 4% upper circuit due to reports that overnight rain in Rajasthan might have damaged the near harvest-ready crop in the state. In Kota, the benchmark market, prices rose by 500 rupees per 100 kg. until the extent of the crop loss is assessed. The eagle variety was sold at 6,500-6,600 rupees per 100 kg, while the badami variety was quoted at 6,200-6,300 rupees. In Ramganj, a key trading centre, prices surged by 400 rupees per 100 kg. Arrivals of the new crop. only 500 bags (1 bag = 40 kg) arrived in the Ramganj market, compared with 2,000 bags on previous day.
Chittorgarh, Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar, and other districts of Rajasthan recorded heavy rain, which might have damaged many rabi crops in some areas. Areas that did not receive heavy rain, could see an increase in yield of rabi crops such as mustard and wheat. The state agriculture department said 20-25% of the coriander crop might have been damaged in Jhalawar district, while losses in other areas might be nominal.
