Paddy Prices Drop in Tamil Nadu: Rice Costs Expected to Fall by 10% Amid Anticipated Bumper Harvest

Paddy prices in Tamil Nadu have decreased by Rs 320 to Rs 480 for a 100 kg bag due to an expected bumper harvest this year. Retail prices for fine rice, currently ranging from Rs 60 to Rs 70 per kg, may decrease by at least 10% in the coming weeks. For instance, RNR paddy, which was previously priced between Rs 1,700 and Rs 2,000 per bag, is now selling for Rs 1,300 to Rs 1,400 in Ramanathapuram.

Paddy is the main crop in Tamil Nadu, producing a total of 7.5 million metric tonnes of rice in the 2023-24 season. Over 300,000 hectares of land are used for paddy cultivation in the state. In Tamil Nadu, the total rice output this year is expected to be significantly impacted by district-wise production variations. Certain districts are projected to see higher yields due to favourable weather conditions, while others may face challenges that could affect their overall production. This district-wise analysis highlights the complexities within the state’s agricultural landscape, as local conditions play a crucial role in determining the final output.

The Secretary of the Federation of Tamil Nadu Rice Mill Owners and Paddy Rice Dealers Association, Dr. A C Mohan, noted that while rice production has generally been around 130 to 135 million metric tonnes (MMT) in India, it experienced a decline of about 3.5% last year due to global factors such as the Ukraine war. However, with the anticipated good harvest this year, paddy prices are falling, which will consequently lower rice prices by approximately Rs 2 to Rs 3 per kg. (Source: New Indian Express)
