Prices steady in key spot markets amid thin trade.

After four straight days of decline, prices of sugar remained steady in the key wholesale markets of the country today amid lacklustre trade. Medium-grade sugar was sold at 3,430 rupees per 100 kg in Mumbai and at 3,220 rupees in Kolhapur, both largely unchanged. Prices of the sweetener had fallen earlier this week as the government announced a higher domestic sale quota for mills for September. The Centre has allocated 2 mln tn for sale and allowed sugar mills, which have exported the sweetener in the ongoing season, to sell an additional quantity equivalent to their exports till August. The total domestic sale quota for September will come out to be around 2.2 mln tn.
