Romania maintains a status of a reliable corn supplier to domestic market of EU. Over the last several seasons Romanian corn sowing area averaged near 2500 Th ha, whilst other EU countries prefer to decrease it. Romanian stable corn crops are vital for traditional corn importers in EU to cover their domestic consumption and decrease imports from the 3rd countries. Over September-January 2017/18, according to port data, Romania increased its total corn exports by +30% y/y. Spain and Italy absorbed 52% of Romanian export potential during the given period due to another year of poor corn crops. Spain almost tripled purchases of Romanian corn, becoming importer number 1 and ousting Egypt from this position. Italy is the second largest buyer and imported seven times more corn from Romania.
