National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Ltd requested govt to create a price stabilisation fund for sugar and procure sugar from cooperative sugar factories for welfare schemes and defence forces. This could help the sugar industry in times of market fluctuations, sugar export and timely payment of cane purchases. Currently, there is a Sugar Development Fund to help the sector in times if need. The money to the fund comes from sugar cess, which will be absolved after the rollout of GST from July. Sugar cess should be diverted to Price Stablisation Fund.
