Thailand to align with WTO on sugar quota from November.

Thailand will bring in new regulations to govern its sugar trading system from the sugar year starting November, to bring it in line with the World Trade Organization’s rules. Thailand has agreed with WTO to revoke its quota system, under which 2.2-2.5 million tonne sugar is set aside for domestic consumption, after it is challenged by Brazil. Brazil challenged Thailand over subsidies for sugar producers that it said have pulled down global prices and were not in line with international trade rules. Under the new rule, Thailand will create a buffer stock of sugar for domestic consumption every month.
