India sent the first supply of 2,500 metric tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan via Pakistani land routes on Tuesday, as part of its humanitarian help to Afghans who have been suffering from a food scarcity since the Taliban seized power in Kabul last August. On October 7, India issued a proposal to Islamabad requesting permission to supply 50,000 tonnes of wheat to the Afghan people via Pakistan. On November 24, it received a positive reception. Following that, both parties communicated to finalise the shipment’s transit methods.
The shipment is part of the Indian government’s pledge to provide 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat to the Afghan people. The wheat will be supplied in several consignments to the UN World Food Program (WFP) in Jalalabad, Afghanistan. In this regard, the Indian government inked an agreement with the World Food Programme (WFP) for the distribution of 50,000 MT of wheat within Afghanistan, according to a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs.
