Sugar output in Thailand during 2018-19 is seen at 13.8 mln tn, down 6% from the estimated 14.7 mln tn produced in 2017-18, due to a fall in cane production in the major growing areas. Sugarcane production is estimated to decline 4% on year to 130 mln tn in 2018-19 “due to reduced average yields. The country is one of the major producers and exporters of sugar in the world. sugar consumption, too, is likely to fall in 2018-19 largely on the back of reduced demand for the sweetener from non-alcohol beverage makers in response to the new sugar excise tax on beverages.
