USDA cuts estimate for India 2017-18 wheat imports (3.5 MMT vs 4 MMT).

USDA has trimmed its forecast for India’s wheat imports in 2017-18 to 3.5 MMT from 4.0 MMT estimated in September. The downward revision in import estimate can be attributed to high domestic supplies following bumper crop in 2016-17 (Jul-Jun). India has signed deals to import 1.2 MMT wheat from Australia and Ukraine since April. Imports, however, are likely to stop now as the government may increase the customs duty on wheat from the current 10%, to boost prices in domestic markets and encourage farmers to take up wheat cultivation in upcoming rabi season.
