USDA pegs 2017-18 global wheat output at record high of 758 mln tn.

US Department of Agriculture raised its estimate for global wheat output for 2017-18 by 1.2 mln tn to a record high of 758.25 mln tn. The previous record was in 2016-17 at 753.6 mln tn. In its latest update, the department has increased its wheat output projection for Argentina by 500,000 tn, Ukraine by 481,000 tn, and for Uzbekistan by 260,000 tn. The department, however, has not updated its output forecast for India. Despite a rise in wheat production, global wheat ending stocks for 2017-18 are seen at 266.1 mln tn, down 1.92 mln tn from previous estimate. Ending stocks are likely to fall due to a poor crop in Australia. Global wheat exports in 2017-18 are seen at 183.59 mln tn, up 675 tn from the previous forecast, due to increase in demand from Indonesia. Indonesia is forecast to be the largest wheat importer for 2017-18 at 12.5 mln tn, passing Egypt, which has traditionally been the top wheat importer.
