USDA pegs India 2017-18 rice output at 107.5 MMT, down 2.4% YoY.

India rice output is estimated to fall 2.4% on year to 107.5 MMT in 2017-18 (Jul-Jun). USDA arm attributed the likely decline in rice production to lower acreage and poor yield after prolonged dry conditions and floods during critical stages in some rice-growing states. Dry spells during Aug-Sep in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and parts of eastern India, coupled with severe floods in Uttar Pradesh and northern Bihar are seen weighing on output this season.
