USDA raises India’s 2018-19 wheat output estimate to 95 MMT.

US Department of Agriculture has revised up India’s wheat production estimate for 2018-2019 (April-March) to 95 MMT from the pre-harvest forecast of 94 million mt on reports of higher yield realization in northern India. Despite delayed planting and inadequate winter rains, sources reported that prolonged cool temperature through the harvest in April, along with lower incidences of disease, resulted in higher yields compared to last year. The estimate of 95 million mt is, however, lower than last year’s record harvest of 98.5 million mt due to reduced planting.
