Uttar Pradesh government has advised wheat procurement agencies to limit daily purchases to 30 tn per day per centre, to ensure that the supply is coming from farmers and no foul play is involved. Flow of wheat to government procurement centres has been high. The government wants to ensure that middlemen are not exploiting farmers by purchasing wheat from them at lesser prices and selling at the minimum support price. Therefore, it has advised procurement centres to scrutinise supplies. Market sources, however, see this is an attempt to cover up the storage problems the government faces, following huge procurement.
