Uttar Pradesh Roller Flour Millers’ Association has urged the government to increase import duty on wheat to 40-50% from 10% as of now, to safeguard the interest of both farmers and millers. Wheat is selling in the wholesale markets of east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar because of a rise in supply following imports coupled with weak demand. The operations of north Indian flour mills have also taken a hit because wheat is being imported by traders in southern India and is also being milled in the region. Furthermore, farmers have seen their returns decline as imports have boosted domestic supply and pulled prices lower, adding that farmers may shift to other crops during sowing season in the face of weak returns from wheat. The association has alleged that the imported Black Sea region wheat is of feed quality and is not fit human consumption. If government imposes a higher duty, import of low quality wheat will be curtailed.
