As per recent release (as on 19th July 2024), the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare states that Tur sowing is up by 73% to 3,348 thousand ha. from 1,934 thousand ha. at the same corresponding period during previous year.
In Karnataka and Maharashtra Tur sowing is up by 252% and 47% respectively year over year basis, which together contributed to 50 to 60 percent of India’s total tur production. In Karnataka, farmers covered 1,336 thousand ha as compared to 380 thousand ha at the same period during previous year. Whereas in Maharashtra acreage is increased by 47% at 1,118 thousand ha. as compared to 760 thousand ha. from previous year.
This year sowing progress is continuously above than last 5-year average sowing week-on-week basis and looking at current situation of monsoon there in normal rainfall occurred in all major Tur growing states.
The cumulative seasonal rainfall during the monsoon season from 1st June to 22nd July over the country was 359 mm which is 0.6% below the normal rainfall of 362 mm. South Peninsula and Central India have received 27% and 5% more showers, while precipitation in East & Northeast and Northwest India remain 14% and 16% deficient during the same period.
